Hot weather today & car started & ran 99.9% normal - guess I'll have to wait for cold weather again. Meanwhile if anyone has any ideas?

How long since you've had the valve clearance checked? It's common for dealers to tick the box but never remove the valve cover. If they were far enough out it would result in reduced power, not sure about error codes though.

Ute is running well now the weather is warm. Will have to wait until weather's cold again to see if the problem returns. ( Sometimes things DO fix themselves :-)

Had a number of frosty mornings already this year. No problems, back to normal throttle response. Who said things dont fix themselves?

Hey guys, did anyone find out what was causing the delayed throttle in their ute? Mine is a 2008 holden rodeo automatic with the 4jj1, when it is cold if I take off then modulate the throttle on and off i have a 2 to 3 second delay, the engine misses and then a puff of smoke out the back. This only happens while cold, once warmed up it drives perfectly and the throttle response is back to normal. I have recorded this happening with a quality scan tool and everything seems to be operating correctly.

I take it when you accelerate there is a 2 second delay and it continues to run at the set speed for up to 3 seconds after taking the foot off the pedal? is this correct?
OR
Is the delay only on opening the throttle and not on the closing?

If you push down and the turbo hasn't/isn't increased/ing it's revs, then yes you will get smoke out the back because it is effectively overfuelling for a short time.
I would be checking the turbo boost chamber and it's freedom of operating the turbo vanes, maybe sticky when cold. Also check the hose to that chamber as they can drop off or be just about off causing less vaccuum to operate the chamber. Split hose, check that, everywhere hoses run.

It is possible the EGR valve sticks open when cold and won't allow the system to operate normally.

A few possibles.
