Cracks have all been outboard on top beside spring hangers.

I interpret that to mean at B in the accompanying picture.
That surprises me. I'd expect a vertical "pull-apart" crack at A because of the forces shown by the long vertical arrows.
Maybe at B some compressional "push-together" wrinkles, not cracks.

If the crack is at B and not A then the welding there may have something to do with it failing. Any weld undercutting will reduce the integrity of the tube.

Well shoot me for getting the terminology worng. What are they called then?

That is just gold right there.....

Not long after I bought my Dmax I was parked next to a BT50/Ranger in a carpark lying under my own looking at the driveline (as you do) and out of curiosity rolled from under the Dmax to the Mazda to compare and was stunned to see just how small and light duty the Dmax's diff/axle housing and driveshaft was in comparison, the Dmax doesn't even have a sliding tailshaft ffs so to hear that housings are cracking is really no surprise to me and makes me wonder how many are wondering around with cracking there as well..

Cracking in the indicated area next to the spring pads could also be due to over tightening of the u bolts by an overzealous suspension fitter.
