I've checked the HD etc and as far as I can tell I have a SATA 3 set up so I can do it. Seems pretty simple really.

From your posting it sounds like you're not very computer savvy. A bit like a 17 year old kid asking how to make his DMax go faster, there are risks you're not aware of. So with respect, a few thoughts.

SSD's are good.

I've got a few Samsung evo 860 for M$ Window$ linux, and a couple of 1TB for data.

And a few portable USB3 SSD's for other specific data that I cart around and stick into any computer I find.

SSD's read & write quicker than SATA. That's relevant if you're loading a 400MB file, but not small stuff like photos or documents, or slow stuff like movies.
They are more reliable, in that there are no moving parts.
They are lighter, smaller, and take less power, so easier to carry around in your backpack and plug in to any old USB.
They cost about 2.5 times as much, last time I looked.

Normally, a computer is only as fast as its slowest component. That's usually the internet, followed by hard disks. So normally a faster hard disk is a significant speed-up.

BUT, in this situation, it's a bit like all the guys with post 2000 Isuzus telling you about what to do with a 1948 Packard. Your XP box will be so old that we don't really know. It might not even have SATA. And it'll have lots of other problems. It's hard to install SSD on XP, and to install a later version of Windows is equally fiddly &/or $$$$$ - like you can put a V8 into a VW, but why would you?

> it's just too slow and has been freezing up a bit more and more.
Slow is one thing - it's always been slow. But if it's getting slower, and especially if it's freezing, it's on its way out. Nobody will even try to fix it, cos unlike your 1948 Packard, it isn't a classic, it's just junk, and nobody will make parts for it any more, and they'll charge $150 just to look at it and tell you that.

Win XP has zero security. If you're using Windows XP to access this forum (or anything on the internet) it's just like publishing all your account details and passwords, and for good measure leave all your keys under a flower pot, with a sign pointing to them.

Honestly, I'd be getting a new one. A quick google
https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/compare ... v302000aub
or similar.

That'll solve
> it's just too slow
and it'll solve
>has been freezing up
and be cheaper in the long run, and way way faster.

Use your old screen, mouse & keyboard, get Libre Office instead of M$ Office, get Thunderbird instead of M$ Outlook, get Firefox or Chrome instead of MS <whatever they call it now>. There's tons of good open source software that replaces all the commercial stuff and is 99% as good, and in some cases better. eg for maps I use QGIS ($0), that does some things better than ArcGIS ($thousands).

Basically I think a new box is a no-brainer.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

That's a spammer from New Delhi your answering there mate. He's creating a place holder and later on he'll come back and add the spam links.

Easy way to tell is an old thread like this one suddenly re appears and the post is kind of vague like this one and also the name used by the poster and it's their first post. (Also helps if you can check the IP address's country of origin...which I can!) A VPN can disguise the country of origin of course but a simply looking at the posters name will usually confirm it. They never just call themselves Bob or Peter etc. for some reason

He won't be replying because like the other 1000 odd attempted spammers that just waste my time he's been banned by name and IP address.

Thanks for the der-alert. I'd wondered about the OP, very off-topic and pretty naive. But Silver05 has a long history here, so I went with it. Didn't look at the recent date though, just launched into one of my favourite topics and did a rave.

Just for interest sake there's another place holder from Mumbai in this thread https://www.newd-max.net/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3239 although this one's easily missed until pointed out. Look for the stupid reply and the odd username, it's a dead give away. I just know what to look for after all this time but usually someone picks it up and notifies me....
The process to join this forum is somewhat complicated just to get banned immediately so these people must really have too much time on their hands.

Anyway I left it there for you Garry just in case you wanted to get anything else off your chest...have at it..

G'day Danno
Velly Velly good work, give 'em Curry, so to speak. You doing your bit makes them "no more there", Luvvit. 'No more there, I learned from my Indian Maths teachers who never explained much, but said when denominators cancelled out something, it was "no more there". I probably still don't know what cancels what, so she "learned me good".
